Threatened Wolves

Poachers on the move

Savon Sanomat reports that police are again worried about poachers targeting wolves in the east of the country.

There are an estimated 70 to 75 wolves in eastern Finland, that is 2 to 8 less than a year ago.

According to police, there are rumours of poaching, but no solid evidence. There is evidence, though, that some tagged wolves have recently been pursued by snowmobiles. However, it is unknown if it was poachers trying to run them down.

They point out the need for real-time reports by locals of suspicious hunting activities. It is difficult, if not impossible, for police to determine what has happened days or weeks after an incident.
