The death of a colt in Croy Canyon west of Hailey on Feb. 13 was confirmed by state officals to be the result of a wolf attack, but after two weeks, trained federal hunters have not found the wolves to blame for the attack.
The colt belonged to filmmaker Kevin Swigert and his wife, Jennifer Swigert, who raise horses and numerous hound dogs and other canines at the far west end of Croy Canyon.
The couple has reported to the press and to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game regular attacks by wolves on their livestock in this area.
They have not responded to numerous calls from the Idaho Mountain Express for comment.
Fish and Game Regional Supervisor Jerome Hansen said on Feb. 23 that Idaho Wildlife Services personnel confirmed that the horse was killed by a wolf or wolves.
Todd Grimm, state director of Idaho Wildlife Services, mounted an effort last week to find and shoot the wolves. Grimm said the search included three flights by airplane to spot the wolves.
“We had another flight this morning and saw nothing,” Grimm said Monday.
Wildlife Services is a U.S. Department of Agriculture program whose mission is to protect people, property and livestock from wildlife.
