MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- Expect a much smaller
wolf harvest this fall if Department of Natural Resources officials get
their wish. The DNR is planning to ask the Natural Resources Board next
Tuesday to reduce the wolf quota by about 100 animals this fall. The
early plan is to seek a 156 wolf harvest in an effort to maintain
sustainable pack numbers.
That number could drop by 50% if the Chippewa tribes hunt wolves, but they oppose the wolf hunt and have not taken a single wolf in the first two seasons.
Wolf hunting is praised by some and criticized by others. The deadline to comment on the wolf hunting recommendations is Friday. Information about the Natural Resources Board meeting and the various proposals is available online at their website.
