Meeting in Kalamazoo over wolf hunt

Thu, Aug 13 2015

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Concerned citizens will meet with DNR officials in Kalamazoo Thursday to talk about wolf hunting in Michigan.

They're expected to provide documents by scientists, including those from Michigan, about why science does not support any future wolf hunts in the state; even if they are de-listed as endangered again by the federal government.

The committee is also expected to discuss the importance of wolves in our wildlife system.
Last November voters rejected two separate laws that would allow wolf hunting.

Michigan had its first wolf hunt in 2013 after the population in the UP grew to more than 600 wolves.
Right now Michigan is in the process of appealing a decision that restored legal protections for gray wolves in the western Great Lakes region.

The Michigan DNR has said residents need to be able to manage the growing population.
